Big Game

BIG GAME SPECIES:

Red Stag, Bull Tahr, Fallow Buck, Chamois, Elk , Arapawa Ram

RED STAG:

Our Red Stag hunting season runs from mid-February, when the stags begin to strip the velvet from their antlers, through late July, as they prepare to shed them.

Our premier hunting area, offers some of the finest red stag hunting experiences. During the “roar,”

We pride ourselves on delivering the ultimate outdoor experience and helping hunters achieve their goals. Our guides are exceptional hunters dedicated to providing a top-quality hunt.

Many hunters also choose to add extra animals to their hunt, such as Tahr, Chamois, Fallow Buck, Elk, and Arapawa Rams, all of which roam the 4000 Acre Hunting ground.

BULL TAHR:

Tahr were introduced into New Zealand in 1904 into the mountains of the Mt Cook region of the South Island for hunting. In the ensuing years the Tahr have spread to the surrounding areas. While only being found in this area of New Zealand, they are the only free-range herd of Tahr in the world.

They thrive in the mountainous terrain, calling the sometimes inaccessible mountains home. Hunting grounds are located inside the Tahr “home” range and as well as access to 50,000 acres close by.

ELK:

Typical elk in this area are often 6×6 or 7×7, with main beams exceeding 50 inches. We are also fortunate to have a variety of non-typical elk.

New Zealand’s elk, or Wapiti, are unique to the South Pacific. They can interbreed with Red Deer, resulting in a distinctive sub-species. While they retain the appearance and vocalizations of traditional elk, they often boast numerous tines, sometimes upwards of 10 or 11 on each antler.

CHAMOIS:

Chamois, the agile monarchs of the mountains, are among the most challenging game species to hunt in New Zealand.  Chamois are present but not in large numbers, so we opt for heli-hunting to pursue these elusive creatures.

We are  highly selective in hunting, targeting only mature bucks. This approach ensures exceptional trophies and helps preserve the population for future generations.

ARAPAWA RAM:

The Arapawa Ram is New Zealand's version of the Big Horn Sheep. Introduced, like all of New Zealand's animals, they were the first animal to be liberated on our shores. Meat and wool production were the main asset of the sheep, until breeding of better-quality sheep breeds made them redundant. Now, hunters get to enjoy the thrill of chasing the “Wiley” rams. While quite a small animal, with dreadlock type wool and some impressive horns, they are survivors and worthy hunt.
